JOHOR BARU: A new authority tasked with implementating and overseeing development projects under the Southern Johor Economic Region (SJER) will act as a one-stop centre between investors and government agencies.
Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the authority would cut red tape and become a mediator between investors and government agencies.
“This authority’s duties will not overlap with the existing work carried out by local governments in the 2,200 sq km area earmarked for the project,” he said yesterday, adding that the project would stretch all the way from Pontian to Kulai, and Johor Baru to Masai.
Abdul Ghani said a comprehensive master plan on the development projects would be ready by the end of the year and the new authority would oversee the projects.
“I expect the projects under the SJER to take about 10 years to be fully implemented,” he said, adding that the time had come for Johor Baru to undergo a transformation into a city of international standard.
Abdul Ghani said this also included the revival of several abandoned projects in central Johor.
Abdul Ghani, who together with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi are joint-chairmen of a committee set up to oversee the projects, gave assurance that the state government would still have executive powers over land as stated under the Constitution.
On whether this will be an “all talk and no action project”, he gave the example of the Danga Bay project which has successfully attracted investors from the Middle East and Japan.
“Apart from that, a medical college and an international school also want to come into the state,” Abdul Ghani said, adding that SJER had good leverage especially with both state and federal governments involved in the project.
He said that although development had already started in the 202,342ha area earmarked under the SJER, there were still a lot of “green areas” waiting to be developed.
Abdul Ghani said manufacturing output within the SJER was RM8bil last year and was expected to hit RM10bil by the end of this year.
He also explained that the infrastructure for SJER was all in place especially with three international ports, the Senai International Airport and highways located within the proposed development area.
Abdul Ghani said some of the attractions under the SJER included international-class hotels, universities, theme park, medical faculty, international school, financial hub, and information and communications technology centres.
Asked on his advice for private landowners, he told them not to rush to sell their land.
On Sunday, Abdullah announced that southern Johor was set to become a metropolis like Hong Kong island and Shenzhen in China.
He said SJER was the largest development corridor earmarked under the Ninth Malaysia Plan compared with other corridors in the country.

Mereka juga haiwan yang pintar dan ada yang berkebolehan untuk menggunakan mekanisma ringkas seperti tuil pintu atau tandas manusia, seperti yang dijelaskan dibawah. Mereka berhubung dengan mengiau ("meow"/"miaou"), mengeluarkan bunyi 'purrr', berdesis dan juga isyarat anggota. Kucing boleh dikatakan baru lagi dijinakkan, oleh itu kucing juga boleh hidup di kawasan liar dan selalunya mereka akan membentuk satu koloni kecil. Hubungan manusia dan kucing menyebabkan kucing dipuja di dalam dongeng dan legenda dari beberapa bangsa, contohnya Mesir Purba, Viking dan juga Cina. |
